Potting Shed Plans – Need More Space For Your Gardening Tools

Posted on Monday, January 4, 2010 in Shed plans

Great Shed Plans

I love flowers and plants, but my husband is the one with the green thumb in our home. He can spend as much time at a plant nursery as he can at a lumber yard. He is continually coming home with more gardening tools, which I am not quite sure what he does with some of them.  He came home recently with a very small narrow rake that had a telescoping handle, I had no idea what it was for, I thought it was a kids rake. He was very patient with me and showed me how he can now get between all the plants in the garden and rake the leaves, where he couldn’t with the big rake.  Makes sense I guess.  The problem is, where to put all this stuff. He had a birthday coming up and I thought about buying him a pre-built garden shed, til I saw how expensive they were.  Not that he isn’t worth it, but I figured we could build one for a lot less.  I got online and found a big selection of potting shed plans, who knew there would be so many.  Well I knew that if I was going to get him to build one of these, he would need to choose the one he liked out of all the potting shed plans. And he did. He chose a shed plan that was large enough to have storage space and a working area for those bad weather days.Having purchased a good set of professionally designed potting shed plans, he has all the information he needs. Such as a complete list of materials, cut sheets, detailed drawings and step by step instructions.  With the list of materials he can now determine how much the shed is going to cost and with the cut sheets showing him exactly how long to cut each piece of wood and what angle to cut them, will save him time.A few other things he learned from his research on building a shed is that you need to check with your local city to see if you are required to have a building permit.  By having a good set of plans, your shed should meet most local building codes without a problem.  Also, depending on the size shed you are building, you have to consider the type of foundation needed.  It is very important that your foundation is level, whether you go with a cinder block support(for small sheds),  or a permanent concrete foundation (for larger sheds).  If you happen to be a member of a homeowners association, you will have to submit the plans to the association for approval, this ensures that your structure meets with the associations guidelines.Lastly, I would recommend using a good quality primer and paint for the finish.  A good quality paint will last longer and will be easier to keep clean.  After all your hard work, you want to protect your investment so that you can use it for years to come.

Free Tool Shed Blueprints

Posted on Monday, January 4, 2010 in Shed plans

Great Shed Plans

If you are considering trying to save a few bucks by looking for a free set of blueprints, please keep reading?A friend of mine picked up a set of free tool shed blueprints not long ago, and guess what? He got what he paid for. The free set of blueprints did not include a material list or cut sheets and the suppose to be detailed drawings could barely even be read.Maybe you are on a tight budget and are just trying to save a few bucks where you can. I am here to tell you, if you invest a little money in a set of plans, you will more than get that money back with the savings in material costs alone.Getting a set of plans for free may sound like an affordable approach, but when you consider the things that could be wrong with the design, it could be quite costly in the long run.  There are a lot of free plans on the market that do not meet most building codes or home owner association guidelines. If you are looking for a set of free tool shed blueprints, think about why someone would give this away for free.  If someone actually goes to the expense of designing it and has it engineered to meet local building codes, wouldn’t they want to charge for it instead of giving it away for free?  I know I would and you would too.Building a tool shed is a major project for a do it yourselfer.  If you don’t have a material list, you could end up buying more material than you need or you may not buy enough and end up making numerous trips back to the lumberyard.  If you don’t have cut sheets that shows you exactly how long to cut each piece of wood and what angle to cut it, you could be throwing wood away because you cut it wrong.  Why not make it easier on you and have a detailed plan on how to build your shed. It will save you money and time.If you want your project to be successful, then it only makes sense to have a set of plans that have been designed by someone who knows exactly what they are doing and have done it successfully over and over again.  Don’t make the mistakes others have and get free tool shed blueprints.

Building Plan – Shed

Posted on Thursday, December 31, 2009 in Shed plans

Great Shed Plans

There are many reasons to build a shed. They are an inexpensive way to create a very versatile space. A shed can be used for general storage, a small workshop, garden shed, woodshed, or even a detached office. So the first thing to think about is what uses you want to get out of your shed. This will affect its placement on your property, the size, design, and whether or not you need to run electricity or even water to it. I once had a client who used their shed as a large food storage/pantry area. They even wired and heated the shed. While most people will not go to this length with their shed, the uses need to be considered.

Once you have determined the functionality that you would like to get out of your shed, you can begin to plan what to include in it. For most of us a shed is an extension of our storage ability for things like Christmas decorations. Others will use a shed to store outdoor equipment from garden tools to mowers and line trimmers. All of these functions only require a dry place that keeps out any curious animals. A shed such as this can be built in a weekend as long as you plan well and have a building plan (shed) to follow.

Most people don’t consider building a small shed as a detached office. It is very inexpensive compared to building an addition an entire detached suite. Since a shed doesn’t need to have a concrete foundation poured in place, it can be constructed in such a way that would allow it to be moved at any point. The building can then be set on blocks or short posts. The lack of foundation is a huge cost saver, since no excavation or concrete is needed. With the addition of a few windows into the design and a simple interior finish, a shed can be come a small home away from home in your backyard.

The simplest form of shed is a woodshed. Usually only three-sided, these sheds keep rain off of wood so that it can cure and stay dry. You don’t even have to add a floor, though I do recommend gravel or some form of flooring since this will discourage pests. Place your woodshed where it can be accessed from the house with ease, even on a snowy night.

Having chosen the building plan (shed) and location, take your materials list (many guides for sale online come with a materials list) to the various box stores and supply yards. Have them bid the materials for you and see if anyone is willing to beat their competitor’s lowest price. Build a relationship with your sales rep, as they will likely be willing to answer questions that arise during your project. Choose your supplier based on material quality, service, and price, then order your materials. Many lumber yards will deliver free of charge if your order is big enough.

At this point, the only thing that remains is to follow the plans and put your shed together. If you hit a snag, check out forum and building sites. They are often very helpful. This can be a fun project to get a few friends together on. Most people are willing to help, especially when food and drinks are provided. Have a blast building your shed!

Outdoor Garden Shed Plans – Need Extra Space For Your Gardening Tools

Posted on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 in Shed plans

Great Shed Plans

My husband likes to “tinker” and he has all these tools, equipment and work benches that takes up just about all the garage.  Then there is my hobby. I love to garden and I have my gardening benches, gardening tools, flower pots, bags of soil and mulch, etc.,etc.,etc. Between “his stuff” and “my stuff”, and all of the holiday decorations that we have in boxes stacked up in the garage, there is no longer any room for our cars.  We have to do something, we either have to get rid of something or find more storage space.  Neither one of us were willing to get rid of anything so we decided to look at some outdoor garden shed plans to move all my gardening stuff to.  I was very excited. We got online and actually found some free outdoor garden shed plans.  But after more research we found out that the free shed plans didn’t have all the information that a good set of professional designed plans had and they were not very expensive.  It was a “no-brainer”, we decided on a set of plans and made our purchase.  We actually went for a shed that was larger than we actually needed, but it will give me more space to work in if weather is bad and we will have more storage space. One of the things my husband didn’t even think about until he started reviewing the instructions was the load capacity for the roof.  We get a lot of snow every winter and know the damage it can cause if you have a flat roof where snow can accumulate. The weight of the snow  could cause your roof to collapse. Security is another factor to consider, specially if your storage shed will be located away from your house or if it’s located behind your garage where you can’t see it.  You may want to consider putting bars on the windows, security lights on the outside and absulutely a good heavy door with a bolt action lock.  Maybe you think some of this is over kill, you just have to decide if it is necessary in your neighborhood. With any structure that you build, it is better to use pressure treated wood.  It is a little more expensive, but it will last far longer than untreated wood. Also, when you are ready to paint your new outdoor garden shed, spend a little more money for a good quality primer and exterior latex enamel paint. The finish will last longer and be easier to keep clean.  Afterall, you want your investment to last a long time.An outdoor garden shed is a great investment. But if you are going to build it yourself, then get a good set of Outdoor Garden Shed Plans. They will more than pay for themselves by saving you time, money and frustration.

Small Shed Plans | DIY Garden Storage Sheds

Posted on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 in Shed plans

Great Shed Plans

A small or medium size shed is a must for any homeowner where storage space is becoming a problem. Most houses have adequate storage space for regular household items in the form of drawers and cupboards. Outside stuff such as lawnmowers, garden tools, car items are not items that the wife would welcome in the house and need to be stored not only outside but preferably out of sight.

Even for those who already have a garage a small shed will be a welcome addition to your garden or yard. If you don’t have loads of stuff to store or not much yard space then a small shed is the answer and there are small shed plans available from your local hardware store or you can do a quick search on the internet.A small shed is quite easy to build and won’t break the bank. You can clean up your yard and garden space and keep all your garden tools and machinery safely out of the reach of inquisitive kids. A clean and tidy uncluttered yard and garden will also add value to your property, keep the wife from complaining about the mess, provide a sun bathing area and give the children a safe environment in which to play. With the aid of a good set of plans you can build a small or medium sized shed in a weekend or two. Your barbecue, power tools, lawnmower and gardening equipment will all be kept safe and dry saving you both time and money. But why stop there; you could build a kennel for Fido, a playhouse for the kids and what about a patio for the wife?

Wood Shed Building Kits – Build Your Own Wood Shed

Posted on Monday, December 14, 2009 in Shed plans

Great Shed Plans

This year I bought myself a lawnmower, I was too embarrassed to go and borrow my neighbours again as I had done for most of the previous year. I had thought to keep it in the garage but there really wasn’t enough room, not if I wanted to put the car in there as well.

We had moved into the house in August last year and having got the house decorated to our liking my wife’s attentions were turning to the garden and so some gardening equipment was required.

When I pointed out that we hadn’t got enough storage space my wife suggested buying a small shed which would sit quite nicely in a corner of our yard. Having priced up the gardening equipment I did not want to go to this further expense.

I was discussing our dilemma with Robert, our kindly next door neighbour, who (he’s a bit of a DIY freak) suggested I build my own shed. Having two left hands I dismissed the idea offhand.

Robert was not one to give up that easily. He explained that there are wood shed building kits on the market that include everything you need to complete the job. The wood is pre-cut to the correct lengths so that all you have to do is fix it together.

I was still unconvinced but Robert said he would help me to build the thing and so we set off to the local home and garden shop.  We didn’t find anything suitable but it gave me some ideas and a search online for computer for wood shed building kits gave me exactly what I was looking for so I placed an order and it arrived five days later.

My wood shed building kit had everything I needed including a really good set of plans; even I could follow them.  We had the shed built in a weekend and I painted it the following week.

Build Your Own Wood Shed – Planning a Wood Shed

Posted on Sunday, December 13, 2009 in Shed plans

Great Shed Plans

A few years ago I built myself a shed, it turned out a disaster. Don’t get me wrong, for a first attempt it was not too bad, a little slapdash maybe, but considering I didn’t have a proper set of plans.

No, the problem was I hadn’t applied for a building permit and the home owners association wasn’t too pleased either. So, within a couple of months I had to take it down again. The result was three wasted weekends and a complete waste of money.

Lesson one: If you are going to build your own shed make sure you get proper planning permission and check that you do not contravene any building guidelines. To do this you absolutely need a proper set of plans including a list of materials to be used. This small outlay will more than pay for itself.

A good set of plans will come with a chart showing the size of your wood cuts. If you are not using a DIY shed kit it may be possible to get your wood cut to size at your local timber yard saving you a lot of sawing. If you are cutting your own wood remember the old adage ‘measure twice, cut once’.

A good deal of consideration should be given to the positioning of the shed in relation to your house. Don’t just throw it up only to find you’ve blocked out the light from the wife’s favourite suntrap!

Make sure that your foundations are sound and give some thought to things such as; will I need electricity, will my shed blend in with the surrounding buildings/landscape. With good planning and a good set of plans building your own shed will be an enjoyable venture providing years of service and may give you the confidence to take on more ambitious projects in the future.
